Alice Hasters on Rosa Parks – My Story
Rosa Parks’ story remains an important reminder even today that “social change is possible – if you are brave. And not alone.”
When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white person on a bus in Alabama in 1955, she sparked one of the most successful protests in history: the Montgomery bus boycott. Her autobiography *My Story* (published in German for the first time by Unionsverlag in 2026, translated from the English by Sonja Bonin) shows, however, that her political resistance extended far beyond that one day. To mark Human Rights Day, Tuğba Ayaz speaks to Alice Hasters, author of the foreword, about the civil rights activist – from Parks’ childhood in segregated Alabama, to her decades of work for the NAACP and the misconceptions that persist to this day regarding her political activism.
