The Literaturhaus visits camera.lit.obscura: Elias Hirschl – Schleifen
A ‘firework display of fresh ideas’ (FAZ) – shortlisted for the German and Austrian Book Prizes in 2026.
With his novels *Salonfähig* (Zsolnay 2021) and *Content* (Zsolnay 2024), the Austrian author Elias Hirschl established himself as a master of literary satire, holding up a mirror to society with equal parts sensitivity and ruthlessness. In ‘Schleifen’ (Zsolnay 2026), he now turns his attention to the power of language – and its limitations. Franziska grows up in the milieu of the Vienna Circle and, as a child, suffers from a strange illness: every symptom she hears or reads about immediately manifests itself in her. Together with the brilliant mathematician Otto, she obsessively researches a perfect universal language capable of unambiguously representing reality.
