A New Way of Seeing, a New World – Sociopolitical Visions of the Avant-Garde, Then and Now
The discussion will explore individual works within their historical context and their relevance to the present day.
Following the Russian Revolution and the end of the First World War, the mood was one of ‘Never again war’. Designers and artists believed that, by adopting new approaches, they could usher in a new way of seeing and help to create a better society. Around a hundred years later, worrying parallels are emerging with that era of upheaval, which came to a provisional end with the rise of totalitarian systems. The discussion will explore individual works within their historical context and their relevance to the present day.
With Adrien Hall, curator and researcher in the cultural history of modernity; Daniela Mirabella, graphic designer and lecturer on the BA Design programme at ZHdK; and Bettina Richter, curator of the poster collection and the exhibition at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich
