Avant-garde – Modernism in poster design during the interwar period

The publication *Avant-Garde*, Poster Collection 38, illustrates the emergence of graphic design as an independent creative discipline. The poster served as a medium for propaganda and public education, promoting new products and technical achievements, and inviting people to engage with debates on new architecture and living, as well as to attend photography, film and advertising exhibitions. Graphic designers, typographers and photographers sought to actively engage with everyday life and experimented with progressive means appropriate to contemporary society. The poster thus became a manifesto of universal modernism.

With Patrick Rössler, communications scholar and curator, and Bettina Richter, curator of the poster collection and the exhibition, Museum für Gestaltung Zürich

In cooperation with the ‘Zürich liest’ book festival.
