A discussion on Heidi Bucher’s ‘Bodyshells’
As part of the exhibition ‘The Body Within Abstraction’, Mayo Bucher and Sabine Schaschl will discuss Heidi Bucher’s ‘Bodyshells’.
This will be followed by a presentation of the book project ‘Mayo: The Project’.
Heidi Bucher’s ‘Bodyshells’ (1972, replicas 2024) are four objects moulded from foam, painted with mother-of-pearl paint and designed to be worn as body shells. In 1972, they formed part of a filmed performance at Venice Beach: the voluminous forms, reminiscent of sea creatures and sci-fi beings, moved tentatively and laboriously from the Pacific Ocean towards the beach. The Bodyshells were performed for the first time in Switzerland at the exhibition opening at Museum Haus Konstruktiv and were set in motion once again on 18 December 2026, as part of the museum’s 40th-anniversary celebrations.
