Kristian Bezuidenhout plays Mozart
Mozart had to stop and start his first concert in Vienna all over again. Mozart himself explains why: because at the start of the concert, ‘the applause was endless’. It is impossible to say with certainty exactly which piano concerto he played on that April evening in 1781. But it was almost certainly the Concerto in E flat major, K. 271, the latest and most spectacular of his concertos. We can still appreciate today what an impact that must have made: there is, for a start, the surprisingly early entrance of the solo piano right at the beginning. Or the wonderfully operatic Andantino. Or the enormously virtuosic finale. For this fireworks display of effects to ignite, it takes someone who can fulfil Mozart’s role: Kristian Bezuidenhout is the perfect pianist for the task, demonstrating equal subtlety and joy in playing on both historical and modern instruments.
A good century after Mozart, another young, highly talented musician travelled to a metropolis: George Enescu, a Romanian violinist, pianist and composer with Paris as his dream destination. And the combination of astonishing skill and immense self-confidence, so clearly evident in Mozart’s piano concerto, is no less palpable in Enescu. His String Octet from 1900 is stunning proof of this: the eight parts are barely enough to capture the wealth of his ideas and demonstrate his polyphonic artistry. This tapestry of sound, interwoven with gold, spans almost forty minutes. Anyone unfamiliar with the piece must hear it at least once in their lifetime.
Individual tickets for subscription concerts can be booked from 20 August 2026. Until then, please send us an email stating your preferred category and the number of tickets required.
