Bach’s Christmas Oratorio
The family choir sings beneath the Christmas tree, Christmas classics from overseas ring out from supermarket loudspeakers, and as early as November, Wham! are rocking the car radio with ‘Last Christmas’ – it’s hard to imagine the Christmas spirit without music and singing. It’s no different at the Musikkollegium Winterthur. So this year, once again, the orchestra and conservatoire choirs are joining forces for a festive concert. And what could be more fitting than the Christmas classic par excellence – Bach’s Christmas Oratorio? This year, four of the six cantatas that Bach wrote for the six original festive days from 25 December to 6 January will be performed. The music, which often has a dance-like quality, takes on complex forms. Artistic arias, narrative recitatives and solemn choruses intertwine, bringing the Christmas story to life. And who knows, perhaps this Christmas, sitting under the tree, you too will sing the famous opening words of the oratorio: ‘Rejoice, be glad! Arise, praise the days!’
Johann Sebastian Bach Part 1: ‘Rejoice, be glad, arise, praise the days’ (for Christmas Day)
Johann Sebastian Bach Part 3: ‘Ruler of Heaven, hear our babbling’ (for 27 December)
Johann Sebastian Bach Part 5: ‘Ehre sei dir, Gott, gesungen’ (for the 1st Sunday after New Year)
Johann Sebastian Bach Part 6: ‘Herr, wenn die stolzen Feinde schnauben’ (for 6 January, Epiphany)
