Happily Ever After
“Choose Happiness” is written on the snack machine. Benjamin just wants a chocolate bar. The coin gets stuck, and customer services know why: Benjamin must have a negative attitude, which is why the machine is being negative towards him. The Choose Happiness customer care app provides him with an avatar – an Emotional Assistant – who looks just like Benjamin and is supposed to help him become the happiest version of himself. To do this, Ben ‘only’ has to overcome his nature.
‘Happily Ever After’ explores the measurement of one’s own psyche in digital capitalism. Whilst the outside world spirals further out of control, we measure our psyche and make it predictable. Happiness guides advocate bringing inner landscapes to bloom and soothing the emotional weather. The rhetoric and imagery of these inner ‘treatments’ are often reminiscent of the visions of geo- and weather engineering; shaping one’s inner nature through targeted interventions. Happiness is a technology.
