Abelo on the Rope – A Gravedigger’s Ballad
Lunzi, the gravedigger, is dead. ‘Finally done for, the shovel’s gone, hanged himself.’ Whilst the funeral feast is being served in the hall, Philipp takes his seat in the empty dining room with his double bass. At the very table where Lunzi had always sat.
Over the course of a beer, with his unmistakable mischief, he recounts stories and anecdotes from the everyday life of the gnarled and mischievous, good-natured and taciturn gravedigger. He gives us a glimpse into this earthy craft, introduces us to the world of funerals, walks with us through the rows of graves, sings and reflects on the past and the transience of life. With death as a silent guest at his side.
