The Theater Kanton Zürich (TZ) was founded in 1971 as a cooperative. The special feature of the theatre is its mobility. As a travelling theatre, it is always playing somewhere else: in the municipalities of the canton as well as in guest theatres ...
Lame duck, blind chicken
By Ulrich Hub
In a back garden, a lame duck leads a lonely existence. Until one day a blind hen strays in and persuades the duck to embark on an adventurous journey: to a place where her most secret wish will come true! The duck has heard of this place too, but knows that no one has ever found it. “Then we’ll just be the first! You keep an eye out for me and I’ll support you in return,” replies the adventurous hen, hooking her wing through the surprised duck’s and off they go. But after just a few steps, a row breaks out. The blind chicken complains about the lame duck’s ‘snail’s pace’ and would rather fly. But the duck refuses. ‘Flying certainly has its pitfalls,’ she explains. ‘Ducks keep crashing. It’s just that nobody talks about it. We may be making slow progress, but at least we’re moving forward.” Yet the path ahead holds its dangers: a wild forest and a deep ravine must be crossed, and many a difference of opinion overcome. Sometimes the duck leads the chicken, sometimes the chicken carries the duck. When the two finally reach their destination after all their trials and tribulations, it becomes clear that the journey has not only changed the two animals, but that their own back garden can be as adventurous as a whole new world.
“Lame Duck, Blind Chicken” is a hilariously funny story by bestselling author Ulrich Hub about courage, true friendship and the magic of illusion.
In our new podcast, the cast and crew offer exclusive insights into the theatre production. Johanna Böckli’s Junge TZ production will be touring German-speaking Switzerland from early November 2024.
