The Physicists
By Friedrich Dürrenmatt
‘Only in the madhouse are we still free. Only in the madhouse are we still allowed to think. In freedom, our thoughts are explosive.’
Dr Mathilde von Zahnd’s sanatorium is home to three patients who claim to be physicists. One believes himself to be Albert Einstein, another Isaac Newton, and the third, Johann W. Möbius, sees himself as a messenger for King Solomon. Following the murder of a nurse, the police launch an investigation, but Ernesti, the patient who believes himself to be Einstein, has already confessed to the crime. The perpetrator of a previous murder is also known: it is Beutler, the patient who believes himself to be Newton. But Detective Inspector Voss’s investigation is bogged down in the everyday madness of the sanatorium. And Möbius believes that staying in the sanatorium is the only way to protect the world from his groundbreaking – and potentially dangerous – discoveries. When a nurse declares her love for Möbius and two secret agents turn up as well, the comedy heads for the worst possible twist.
