The Salmon of Wisdom
A love story from Ireland featuring Irish music
Brian Cleeve wrote this delightful and touching short story, in which a narrator looks back on his youth and his first love. The narrative is interwoven with plenty of Irish music. Around twenty songs have been distilled from the vast repertoire of Irish ballads, as well as from lively, purely instrumental jigs and reels.
The band’s line-up mirrors that of traditional Irish bands as found in pubs: The magnificent Joe McHugh, an Irishman, plays the uilleann pipes (Irish bagpipes), tin whistle (Irish flute) and mandolin. David Aebli switches between mandolin, Irish bouzouki, double bass and guitar. Felix Haller plays the accordion and guitar, Juno Haller the fiddle and autoharp. Finally, Tom Keller plays the bodhrán (Irish drum) as well as the guitar and double bass.
The story “Cait and I” begins and ends, gently playing on themes from the great Irish fairy tale “The Salmon of Wisdom”.
An evening filled with Irish music – from delicate folk to the punk of the Pogues.
