Trophy
A play based on the novel by Gaea Schoeters
In the guise of a thriller, the award-winning screenwriter and novelist Gaea Schoeters examines the complexities of domination, power and humanity, whilst simultaneously challenging the enduring stereotypes through which the West views Africa. Her stirring novel caused quite a stir in the literary world. Roger Vontobel, artistic director of the Bern Theatre, is bringing it to the stage as an oratorio and a swan song to white male dominance.
At last it has arrived: the hunting licence for the black rhino, for which Hunter White has paid an obscene sum on the black market. He isn’t in it for the money; he is delighted at the thought of finally bagging number five of his Big Five and taking it home as a trophy. But then everything goes wrong, and poachers kill the rhino intended for him. When the owner of the luxury lodge in the middle of the steppe compares the complex issues of species conservation, tourism and hunting with the protection of minorities, the white hunter is plunged into a disturbing feverish dream. Has he really been offered the chance to hunt a human being, to bag the Big Six?
