Romeo and Juliet
A play by William Shakespeare
Amidst civil war and the plague, amidst fear and hardening hearts, two young people – the children of feuding families – meet and fall in love. For the sake of their love, they fight against a world that has settled into hatred. The Heidelberg production of what is arguably the most famous of all love stories tells of the revolutionary power of youth, of their belief in change and the future even in times of greatest uncertainty.
The plague is raging in Verona. A bitter civil war is tearing the city apart. Romeo and Juliet confront this world of threat and mistrust with the power of their feelings. They firmly believe that their love can change everything. This reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s masterpiece focuses on a society in a state of emergency and, at its heart, on two young people who refuse to bow to it. The drama is complemented by texts from bestselling author Mithu Sanyal, which bring the story into the present day. With this story of a radical, daring love, Bernadette Sonnenbichler launches her directorship at the Heidelberg Theatre and Orchestra – and we are seamlessly continuing our excellent collaboration with this partner theatre.
