Gauthier Dance

‘Turning of Bones’, choreographed by Akram Khan

Akram Khan is regarded as an exceptional talent with a keen insight into the human psyche. For this spectacular choreography, he is collaborating with Gauthier Dance for the first time. ‘Turning of Bones’ is the story of two lovers who are tragically confronted with the theme of sacrifice and victims. Khan creates an atmospheric world in a setting that is unusually minimalist for him, placing the dance and raw emotions at the centre.

‘Turning of Bones’ alludes to a ritual of remembrance practised mainly in Madagascar – Famadihana – in which people remove the wrapped remains of their ancestors from their graves to reconnect with their forebears and their heritage. They refresh the names on the cloths, carry the bones above their heads and dance with them. Instead of the elaborate stage sets for which Akram Khan is known, the space here is kept abstract and focuses entirely on the intensity of the dance. The evening is emotionally carried by Aditya Prakash’s original music.
