Hervé Koubi Company

“Barbaric Nights or the First Mornings of the World”, choreography by Hervé Koubi

Hervé Koubi’s company, with its energetic, powerful and at times dizzying movement vocabulary, is fondly remembered by Winterthur’s dance audience from the 2024/25 season. Inspired by five years spent living between France and Algeria, the ensemble has created a dance journey through time to the past cultures of the so-called barbarian peoples around the Mediterranean.

Who were these barbarian peoples, of whom the Bible, the chronicles and ancient monuments bear witness? In Koubi’s exploration of this theme, he realised that these diverse cultures continue to live on within us right up to the present day, and that they connect today’s Eastern and Western Mediterranean countries more strongly than they divide them. The other, the foreign, has always caused fear and continues to unsettle us today. The choreographer brings this age-old fear of the unfamiliar to the stage. His athletic, expressive choreography is influenced as much by the Eastern world as by breakdancing.
