Junior Ballet Zurich
‘Art Matters’ – a two-part ballet evening. World premiere.
Sensual, expressive dance meets masterful works of art: ballet director Cathy Marston is keen to engage in creative dialogue with renowned institutions in the city and canton of Zurich. This is how the Junior Ballet’s new evening programme has come about, in close collaboration with the Kunsthaus Zürich and the Kunstmuseum Winterthur.
The two museums, with their inexhaustible variety of art treasures from a wide range of eras, become a meeting place for the two choreographers, Houston Thomas and Aleix Martínez, as well as the 14 dancers of the Junior Ballet. Joint visits to the respective exhibition spaces and dialogues with art experts from both institutions serve as inspiration for two new choreographies.
Both choreographers have made their careers as soloists and now captivate audiences with their own works. The American Houston Thomas was born and raised in Chicago. In 2013, he found his artistic home at the Semperoper Ballet in Dresden, where he was a soloist until 2023. In 2018, he also began choreographing there.
Aleix Martínez, originally from Barcelona, was a principal dancer with the Hamburg Ballet. He studied at the ballet school there and in Marseille. He has been working as a choreographer since 2011 and has been recognised as an emerging artist by the magazine ‘Tanz’, amongst others.
