Book launch: Max Frisch’s correspondence with Peter Suhrkamp
In Peter Suhrkamp, the German publisher twenty years his senior, the up-and-coming Swiss author Max Frisch found a mentor and friend. His *Diary 1946–1949* was published as part of the very first catalogue of Suhrkamp Verlag, which had been founded in 1950. Their extensive correspondence continued until 1959, when Suhrkamp, who had been severely scarred by his imprisonment in a concentration camp, died. The publisher oversaw the creation of novels such as *Stiller* and *Homo faber*, did not hold back with his criticism, and championed the staging of plays such as *Biedermann and the Arsonists*. Under his ‘friendly wing’, Frisch achieved his breakthrough as a world-renowned author.
In conversation with Christine Lötscher, Tobias Amslinger and Barbara Wiedemann present the edition of the correspondence between Max Frisch and Peter Suhrkamp. An exhibition offers an insight into original letters from the author and his publisher.
