Synthetic biology – the building blocks of life

Can we engineer life? Synthetic biology is attempting to do just that. Researchers are creating new biological systems, designing organisms with new properties and using cells as ‘biological machines’. The lecture explores the fundamentals, achievements and unresolved questions in this emerging field of research and presents examples – ranging from programmable cells and artificial yeast to bioengineered microbes.
