The phenomenon of parasocial relationships

Closeness without meeting: How media figures become confidants

Why do we feel so close to certain media figures, even though we have never met them? This presentation explains how such ‘parasocial relationships’ develop – through repeated encounters, stories, empathy and social media. It shows when such bonds can provide comfort, guidance or inspiration, but also where problematic boundaries arise. A look ahead at influencers, virtual characters, AI and immersive media explores how our understanding of closeness is changing as media becomes increasingly personalised.
