Five minutes. That is the average time it takes for TikTok to recommend misogynistic content to a 15-year-old – without them even searching for it. The recommendation algorithms used by TikTok, Instagram and YouTube are inscrutable black boxes: they shape opinions, amplify emotions and can draw people into radical online worlds within minutes. Drawing on an SRF experiment, this talk shows how these algorithms work, how platforms monetise attention – and what can be done about it.
