Does the media industry strengthen or weaken democracy?

Without democracy, there can be no critical, challenging journalism. Without journalism, there can be no liberal democracy. But these twins are under threat. Some democracies are becoming illiberal. And both the media industry crisis and digitalisation are fuelling a form of ‘clickbait journalism’ that flouts all standards – even in Switzerland. Subtlety and nuance are giving way to sensationalism. What can be done? In search of a form of journalism that is more conducive to democracy.
