Humans and the Climate since the Modern Era

How ideas of progress, growth and control continue to shape our relationship with the climate to this day

Since the modern era, humankind has been altering not only its environment but, increasingly, the Earth’s climate as well. This lecture series traces how climate has become a key issue for the future of society, how industrialisation ushered in the fossil fuel era, and why, in the 20th century, the belief emerged that the climate could be controlled through technology. Finally, the series discusses the idea of a post-growth society as a response to current socio-economic and environmental challenges.
