The gas cylinder as a structural type

Including a tour: the telescopic gas holder and the Schlieren gasworks site

The gasometer is an engineering structure which, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, was used to store locally produced coal gas for street lighting. Dr Barbara Berger gives us an overview of the history of this industrial architecture and takes us high above the imposing Schlieren gasometer, which features an original cover designed by engineer Jürg Conzett. Together with Urs Kloter, we tour the magnificent industrial architecture of the gasworks site. The highlight is experiencing the power and energy of the rhythmically moving Sulzer tandem compound steam engine from 1904, coupled with the alternating current generator from Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon.
