Monet’s painting technique

Paintbrush, palette and plein air

More than almost any other Impressionist, Claude Monet was drawn to the outdoors to capture the colours of light on canvas. For his plein air painting, he made use of all the technical advances in the manufacture of art materials and employed pre-primed canvases, new paints and brushes. Drawing on his own experience and observations, he captured atmospheric effects with bold brushstrokes – whether smooth or impasto – in a fascinating interplay of colours and forms. In doing so, he translated the latest findings on optics and colour perception into his painting.
