Vilhelm Hammershøi – Painter of the Silent Sound

Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864–1916) was a Danish painter of exceptional expressiveness. A master of atmospheric compositions, he created a distinctive visual world using finely nuanced shades of grey. Together with his wife, Ida Ilsted (1869–1949), he transformed the interiors of his home into settings of enigmatic stillness. It is not the action that takes centre stage – rather, a quiet resonance pervades the scene. Hammershøi was familiar with both the works of Henrik Ibsen and the tradition of Dutch interior painting, and from these he developed an independent, symbolist-influenced visual language.
