KiK: St Francis and Giotto’s cycle of frescoes in Assisi

Poverty and religious propaganda at odds

Giotto’s frescoes in the upper church of San Francesco in Assisi are regarded as one of the turning points in the history of Western painting. Shortly before 1300, Giotto recounted the life of Saint Francis with great vitality. The monumental fresco cycle can also be interpreted as a reinterpretation of the life of St Francis. The socially critical aspects of Franciscan piety are omitted. Instead, the church hierarchy is portrayed in a propagandistically favourable light. The lecture demonstrates the extent to which Giotto was influenced by his patrons in his choice of subjects. This in no way detracts from the magnificence of the murals.
