Max Frisch & Richard Yates on Long Island

In his late autobiographical story from 1975, Max Frisch describes a weekend spent on the eastern tip of Long Island, off the coast of New York. In his final novel (1986; German edition 2016), the American author Richard Yates looks back forty years to his family of origin, with whom he spent his summer holidays there in 1942. What makes this setting an ideal place for taking stock? Great literature set against a vast landscape: ‘Montauk’ and ‘Cold Spring Harbor’.
