Comedy, Drama – Germany 2025
The spine-tingling rendition of the song ‘Tainted Love’ alone makes this successful autobiographical film about an actor’s rise to fame well worth watching
In his early 20s, the shy Joachim is unexpectedly accepted into Munich’s most prestigious drama school and moves into his grandparents’ upper-class villa there. His grandmother Inge, a former actress, and his grandfather Hermann, an emeritus professor of philosophy, lead a daily life full of bizarre rituals and copious amounts of alcohol. Whilst Joachim struggles at drama school with his own inhibitions, challenging teachers and seemingly absurd exercises, in his private life he is trying to come to terms with the accidental death of his brother Philipp.
Torn between the demands of his training and the loving, nostalgic and eccentric world of his grandparents, Joachim tries to find his place in the world – without knowing what role he is actually supposed to play in it.
Based on the best-selling autobiographical novel by actor Joachim Meyerhoff, the film combines the classic search for identity found in coming-of-age stories with a lovingly honest intergenerational dialogue.
