In this fast-paced screwball comedy, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn duel as a married couple in court. He is the prosecutor and she is defending a young woman who tried to shoot her unfaithful husband.
As Adam (Spencer Tracy) and Amanda Bonner (Katharine Hepburn) read the newspaper at the breakfast table, they learn of a dramatic case. Doris Attinger (Judy Holliday) tried to shoot her husband after she caught him in bed with another woman. An argument soon breaks out between the lawyer couple: Amanda is convinced that the young woman has not received the same justice as a man in a similar situation, which Adam vehemently denies. To prove her point, Amanda endeavours to defend the accused. At the same time, Adam learns that, as the public prosecutor, he has to take the case to court.
Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy were also a couple in real life at the time. As befits a screwball comedy, Cukor's film boasts quick-witted characters, plenty of pace and wit. However, the screenplay by Ruth Gordon (who later became famous with ROSEMARY'S BABY) and Garson Kanin is even more progressive than many other representatives of the genre. Gender equality is negotiated in court in an unusually direct and sharply pointed way, and typical male and female characteristics are scrutinised. A classic that was ahead of its time and which we are showing from a rare 35mm archive print.
