Alien
With introduction to the monthly programme "Space Is the Place" (5. 6.)
Ridley Scott's cult film is a mixture of space opera and horror film. A style-defining milestone of the genre.
The year is 2122 and the central computer of the spaceship Nostromo intercepts a distress call and wakes the six-man crew from their cryogenic sleep. The crew, led by the tough Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and the android Ash (Ian Holm), are forced by their regulations to investigate the signal. During their explorations, they come across an abandoned spaceship. In the wreckage, the crew discovers an alien creature that gets on board despite all precautions. In the confines of the space freighter, a fight for survival begins.
Ridley Scott's legendary science fiction shocker is one of the essential works of 1970s New Hollywood cinema. The famous alien was designed by Swiss artist HR Giger, who was honoured with an Oscar for his work. For her cool portrayal of Ripley, Sigourney Weaver became a female action heroine and revolutionised Hollywood's image of women.
