ANTIGONE :: COMEBACK

A rehearsal with Weigel and Brecht | A live VR production by RAUM+ZEIT

Resistance | Remembrance | Justice

Brecht and Weigel are rehearsing *Antigone*. Wearing VR headsets, you are immersed in a theatre rehearsal of Brecht’s legendary 1948 production of Sophocles’ play – and you are completely alone. Live and virtually, the audience comes within touching distance of Brecht and Weigel. Amidst the conflict between Antigone and Creon, between tyranny and resistance, the personal struggle between Brecht and his partner Helene Weigel comes to the fore. Theatre as a subjective journey into the inner self.

The historical background: in 1947, the couple returned to Switzerland from exile in the United States. Brecht’s adaptation of *Antigone* for the Theatre Chur – with Weigel in the title role – was his first theatrical work in Europe after the war. Weigel, who had not been on stage for 15 years, is actually too old for the role of Antigone. Both are existentially dependent on the play’s success.

Following *ZAUBERBERG :: Expedition into the Present*, RAUM+ZEIT returns to the Theater Casino Zug with *ANTIGONE :: COMEBACK* – invited to the 2019 Swiss Theatre Festival and since then featured at numerous festivals. The collective, winner of the Friedrich Luft Prize, skilfully combines virtual reality and live performance in its hybrid theatre productions. Using VR headsets and 360° film, RAUM+ZEIT blurs the boundary between virtual and analogue reality, between dream and reality, and between the self and the other. In RAUM+ZEIT’s works, one always encounters oneself as well.
