A bewildering tale centred on the impossibility of coming to terms with the reality of transience – both moving and funny.
Ivan Ilyich – aged 45, a lawyer – has achieved it all: a career, a family, status, the right friends. All his life he has lived up to everyone’s expectations, whilst successfully keeping life at arm’s length. A ridiculous accident shakes the very foundations of his existence and forces him to embark on an inner journey – his first and last.
Leo Tolstoy’s novella *The Death of Ivan Ilyich*, published in 1886, captivates with the immense mastery with which the Russian writer brings the title character’s struggle with death to life. DAKAR’s theatre adaptation explores and comments on the human fear of death and our powerlessness in the face of fate in a multi-layered, sombre yet light-hearted blend of live action and puppetry.
