B-Girl Battle | FLUX crew

Breakdance performance

“Peace, love, unity and having fun” – that’s what they say in hip hop, isn’t it? But who gets to enjoy themselves, and who is part of that unity? Who is included in the picture, and who isn’t? Pia Ringel, Azuka Angulo and Ida Winter fight back in B-Girl Battles and speak out about the sexism, the norms and the injustices they face. In time with the music, their trainers dance across the floor. Their bodies take shape to make a statement, whirling and shouting, spinning in circles and slamming the facts down onto the floor. Peace, love, unity and having fun, sure. But for whom?

B-Girl Battles is a breaking dance piece that reflects on and challenges the status quo of our society with its sexist structures. The piece raises gender issues and brings them to light through personal stories. What expectations are imposed on us based on our (supposed) gender? Pia Ringel, Azuka Angulo and Ida Winter address sexism and toxic masculinity. On stage, they both re-enact and critique the status quo, whilst suggesting ways in which it could be made more feminist. In B-Girl Battles, structural, gendered injustices in society are highlighted and addressed using the example of breaking or breaking battles.
