B-Girl Battles
A breaking dance piece

‘Peace, love, unity and having fun’ – that’s what they say in hip-hop, isn’t it? But who gets to enjoy themselves, and who is part of that unity? Who is included, and who isn’t? Pia Ringel, Azuka Angulo and Ida Winter take a stand in B-Girl Battles and speak out about the sexism, the norms and the injustices they encounter in the breaking scene. In time with the music, their trainers dance across the floor. Their bodies take shape to make statements, whirling and shouting, spinning in circles and slamming the facts onto the floor.

In B-Girl Battles, the dancers raise gender issues and bring them to light through personal stories. On stage, they both replicate and critique the status quo, whilst suggesting ways in which it could be made more feminist.

Post-performance discussion

After each performance, the dancers answer questions and talk about their experiences.
