Baavgai Bolohson - If Only I Could Hibernate
Feature film (Mongolia/France/Switzerland/Qatar, 2023), directed by Zoljargal Purevdash
Ulzii, a poor but highly gifted and proud teenager, lives with his family in the yurt district of Ulaanbaatar. He has the chance to demonstrate his exceptional academic talent in a physics competition, which could secure him a scholarship and open up future prospects. However, he must first get his siblings through the freezing winter and, to do so, take on a risky job. Mongolian director Zoljargal Purevdash tells the coming-of-age story of a pragmatic young man with an unvarnished gaze, far removed from any romanticism, set against the relentless cold of Mongolia, whilst finding humour and warmth in everyday family life.
Ages 10 and over, 98 minutes, original version with German subtitles
