A light-hearted dystopia about the struggle for humanity
Following an environmental disaster, the Earth is shrouded in mist and white dust. Helene and her granddaughter Emma have taken refuge in a limestone cave in the Alb. They struggle to find their way in a bleak world where only a few people have survived. Yet there are bunker complexes where extremely wealthy preppers have barricaded themselves in with their guards. When the guards turn against their masters, looting and war ensue. Emma is kidnapped, but Helene manages to rescue her … The knowledge the young woman’s grandmother can pass on to her is drawn from memories of the old days and from a belief in what makes us human.

Beate Rothmaier writes novels, short stories, essays and experimental works. Since her debut with the novel *Caspar*, her work has been honoured with numerous grants and awards, including the City of Zurich’s ‘Werkjahr’, the Landis & Gyr Cultural Foundation’s London Fellowship, the Friedrich Hölderlin Prize and the Lilly Ronchetti Prize. After 25 years in Zurich, she now lives in southern Germany again. “Weißraum” is her fourth novel.
