CAIF CULTURAL HUB

A conversation with Esther Hunziker and Manuel Flurin Hendry. Hosted by Pascale Speck

What does art mean in the age of artificial intelligence? And what defines an artistic practice when images, texts and audiovisual worlds can increasingly be created using generative AI systems?

The renowned artist Esther Hunziker has been working with digital technologies and algorithms for over three decades. In her artistic practice, she explores the interstices in which identities, images and narratives are thrown into question by digital systems. Manuel Flurin Hendry, filmmaker, ZHdK lecturer, and senior researcher at ETH Zurich, fundamentally questions in his presentation what we actually mean when we talk about ‘AI’. He critically reflects on the notions of intelligence, creativity and authorship associated with it.

In the subsequent moderated discussion with the curator Pascale Speck, the discussion centres on the question of what constitutes a well-founded fine-arts practice when engaging with AI. What distinguishes artistic exploration from mere technical tinkering? And how is AI changing our understanding of art, authorship and the value of creative work?

The Zurich AI Festival is a flagship initiative presented by ETH AI Centre, Greater Zurich Area, the City of Zurich, Canton of Zurich and Zurich Tourism, supported by leading partners from academia, industry and public administration.

A collaboration between the Creative AI Foundation (CAIF) and After The Algorithm (ATA), hosted at the Kulturhaus Helferei as part of the Zurich AI Festival.
