Camerata & Kids – Beethoven Deconstructed

L. van Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major (arr. for piano and strings)

Camerata & Kids is Camerata Zürich’s family programme for children aged 7 and over. In this newly designed format, children and adults experience together in the concert hall how classical music becomes understandable step by step. The works are introduced in an age-appropriate way, brought to life, taken apart and put back together again, and explained through small musical observations and experiments so that even young ears can follow them with curiosity.

This concert is dedicated to a work with many facets. It can sound delicate and contemplative, then clear, energetic and full of movement. Children will experience how Beethoven shapes something greater out of small ideas. A motif may recur, be transformed, suddenly appear in a new light or take a completely different direction.

In the first part, the presenter guides the audience through selected musical moments from the concert. What is the soloist doing, and how does the ensemble respond? How does a musical dialogue develop? When does the music seem calm, when tense, and when surprising? In this way, children learn to listen more closely and to consciously perceive the relationship between the piano and the strings.
This work is particularly well-suited to this purpose. It shows that classical music consists not only of beautiful melodies, but also of questions, answers, contrasts and developments. Children discover how music creates tension, how it can express feelings without words, and how the interplay of many voices gives rise to a lively musical progression. The piece is then performed in its full context. What was previously explored together can now be heard as a whole.
