A journey through the depths of romantic melodrama
A romantic affair between music and language – clever, witty and staged with ironic seriousness.
The melodrama tells us stories of fear and longing, of the magic and terror of our daydreams and nightmares. At times highly fashionable, at others rather scorned, the genre has always been an experimental one, in which composers sought new means of expression. When song falls short – whether because it is too ordinary or, indeed, too beautiful – the melodrama opens the door to something new, inexpressible, uncanny or even ironically comic.
Featuring works by Friedrich Nietzsche/Joseph von Eichendorff, Robert Schumann/Friedrich Hebbel, Carl Reinecke/Heinrich Heine, Franz Liszt/Gottfried August Bürger, Arnold Winternitz/Gustav Meyrink and others.
