THE ALARM CLOCKS RING, THE BRAIN SLEEPS

Lunch & Lecture: What sleep biology tells us about getting a lesson off to a good start

Many children and teenagers often sit in the classroom looking completely knackered during the first few lessons and are barely able to take anything in. The reason is not a lack of discipline, but biology: as they grow up, their biological clock shifts later. A new study by the University of Zurich and the Zurich Children’s Hospital now shows that when school starts later or at more flexible times, young people sleep significantly more, are healthier – and also perform better academically. What does the biology of sleep tell us about the optimal start time for lessons? And what can schools, parents and policymakers learn from this?

An event in cooperation with the Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of Zurich.
