Documentary on Sunday: Barbara Forever

Brydie O’Connor, USA 2026

PREMIERE: “I was born when I became a lesbian,” says Barbara Hammer, the American experimental filmmaker and pioneer of films with a distinctly female and queer perspective.

A beautiful portrait, which she helped to create shortly before her death. Queer cinema pioneer Barbara Hammer (1939–2019) began making films at the age of twenty-seven and came out as a lesbian in her early thirties. ‘My life has been lived in film’: the sheer abundance of film footage from her life also forms the basis of *Barbara Forever*, Brydie O’Connor’s feature-length debut, which succeeds in the mammoth task of doing justice to this dazzlingly charismatic personality: a pioneer of lesbian-queer self-representation ‘in a world where we are invisible’, a seductive lover, a filmmaker with a penchant for experimentation and taking risks. Above all: a zest for life. Through her films, including DYKETACTICS (1974), AUDIENCE (1982) and NITRATE KISSES (1992), previously unseen archive footage, Barbara’s narrative voice and, with her partner Florrie Burke as a further focal point, the very concept of temporality is queered: plenty of sex and intimacy, the theory of the ‘cinema of touch’, the desire for artistic recognition, her relationship with her mother within an immigrant family, and the mission to pass on and share what film is capable of – not least in the face of her illness and impending death. Fans, newcomers and those returning to her work alike: let yourselves be moved by this dyke poetry!
