God is a man. Really? In GIRLS & GODS, Ukrainian Femen activist Inna Shevchenko meets women who no longer accept the patriarch in heaven without question. Blurring the lines between protest, spirituality and personal faith, the result is a film that is as provocative as it is inspiring, exploring power, religion and female self-determination.
Ukrainian Femen activist Inna Shevchenko travels the world, meeting women of diverse religions and worldviews. Some have turned their backs on their faith, others defend it, whilst still others are fighting to change it from within. Together, they pose a central question: Can religion be compatible with equality?
GIRLS & GODS thrives on the candour of its encounters. Priestesses, theologians, female imams, activists and former believers contradict one another – and sometimes even themselves. It is precisely this that gives rise to a nuanced picture of power, spirituality and female self-determination.
