DOKFILM – WHO IS STILL ALIVE
By Nicolas Wadimoff
By Nicolas Wadimoff
Winner of the ‘Prix de Soleure’, Switzerland’s most lucrative film award, QUI VIT ENCORE tells the stories of people from Gaza. Gathered around a walk-in map of the Gaza Strip, a doctor, a tech entrepreneur, a musician and other eyewitnesses recount life before the war. It is precisely the absence of images of war that enables us to perceive what war truly means. A masterpiece!
Nicolas Wadimoff deliberately avoids spectacular images of war. Instead, he gathers his protagonists in a dark room. A doctor, entrepreneurs, a musician and other eyewitnesses pinpoint their memories on a map, recount their former daily lives and paint a picture of a society that is so different from the one depicted in war reporting. The film creates a context far removed from the actual events of war, thereby enabling a deeper understanding of the physical destruction and human suffering.
With great restraint and human warmth, the result is an extraordinary documentary about displacement, identity and the power of memory. QUI VIT ENCORE gives a voice to those who are often reduced to mere statistics in public reporting – and reveals what war means beyond the destruction.
