Duck, You Sucker (1971)
Sergio Leone, 1971
Set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution, the barefoot bandit Juan (Rod Steiger) roams the country with his sons, robbing the wealthy passengers of stagecoaches. Along the way, he encounters the explosives expert and terrorist Seán ‘John’ Mallory (James Coburn). After some initial teething problems, the two join forces to steal the gold reserves from the Bank of Mesa Verde.
With DUCK, YOU SUCKER, Sergio Leone finally ventured into the world of Zapata Westerns and delivered a truly magnificent film. Rod Steiger and James Coburn work perfectly together, whilst everything around them blows up. And the flashbacks in this entertaining film feature one of Ennio Morricone’s most beautiful melodies.
