A connected world – long-distance trade in the ancient Mediterranean

Even in antiquity, the Mediterranean region was characterised by a wide variety of trade routes: evidence of trade links with both the Levant and Egypt, as well as between the eastern and western Mediterranean, dates back to the Bronze Age. In the Late Geometric and Early Archaic periods, trade in Mediterranean products extended as far as Northern and Central Europe.

The exhibition displays objects from the City of Winterthur’s collection of antiquities. The archaeological collection has grown in parallel with the coin collection and contains, on the one hand, the oldest archaeological finds from the city of Winterthur. In addition, objects from ancient Mediterranean cultures and prehistoric cultures have been systematically collected since the second half of the 19th century.
