Essay
Intensive workshop in small groups
In an essay, an author guides us through their train of thought.
Content, form, style, how one element leads to another, how arguments are presented, justified and substantiated – all of this is individual, personal and varies from person to person.
An essay should come across as elegant; after all, the word does come from French. Conceptually, it is more ‘haute couture’ than ‘off the peg’. A ‘discourse’ with ‘esprit’. Sharp, effortlessly light ‘aperçus’ and ‘bon mots’ – even when dealing with serious topics.
Imaginative surprises are welcome. Overused clichés, lengthy quotations and pedantic footnotes should be avoided; thinking for oneself, on the other hand, is encouraged.
