No gravel square in the city is as authentic as that of the Kanzleiareal in hectic Kreis 4, where the Xenix cinema and the Xenix bar are located. A home for films, a space for cineastic discoveries and carefully curated programmes, for discussions ...

Festen (1998)
Thomas Vinterberg, Denmark 1998
The head of the family, hotelier Helge Klingenfeldt-Hansen, was supposed to celebrate his sixtieth birthday in a dignified manner, surrounded by his loved ones at the family hotel. Despite the German master of ceremonies’ best efforts, the party is threatened with disaster: the eldest son, Christian, throws the gathering into turmoil when he accuses his father of child abuse.
The camera is constantly at the heart of the action, following up close as the deceptive façade of a family idyll crumbles piece by piece. Amidst the champagne-fuelled revelry, unsavoury social traits rise to the surface of this supposedly genteel setting: Naively racist pop songs, recovering violent offenders and hushed-up affairs – Vinterberg ruthlessly strikes where it hurts, at the pain-trigger of the truth.
