Fossil Crustaceans: An Evolutionary Success Story

Arthropods are among the most successful groups of animals in the Earth’s history. On this evening tour to mark Geodiversity Day, we will explore their evolution and discover fossilised ‘crawlers’ dating back several hundred million years. Selected items from the museum’s collection show just how diverse these animals were back then: from early marine dwellers to terrestrial forms that also took to the air.

But how did the sometimes delicate bodies of these animals manage to be preserved as fossils at all? And what do their fossils reveal about habitats long since lost? Fossils offer a unique insight into a group of animals whose extraordinary success continues to this day.
