Helga Schneider ‘I KNOW’

Black humour, sharp witticisms and a pinch of midlife crisis

Ripe Fruit | Late-life Puberty | Anarchy

At the age of 60, with 40 years on stage behind her, Helga Schneider proves one thing above all: it’s those who don’t let life get them down who are the funniest! In her latest solo show, she celebrates life. Dressed entirely in white. Because, viewed through a prism, white is a firework display of red, green and blue – a cocktail of vanity, life experience and a dash of healthy self-deception. Helga Schneider takes to the stage like a hurricane in high heels, with a voice that makes the walls shake and a quick wit that silences everyone around her. Helga unleashes a storm of words in all directions, and the audience is in tears – with laughter.

But what comes after 40 years in show business? A midlife crisis? Helga asks: “When does the fun stop?” The answer: “Never!” Sharp, honest and liberating, she talks about growing older, life’s quirks and the absurdities of society. ‘After the blossom comes the fruit,’ she says, and her fruits are juicy, cheeky and full of surprises. Ripe fruit, according to her philosophy, should be harvested. Helga reaps applause and standing ovations. A wedding all in white? Why not! White makes a statement. Helga stands by it, with wit, charm and a touch of anarchy. “I’m more of a red and green sort, but I like a bit of blue now and then.” Helga Schneider proves that vintage comedy has no expiry date.
